A Taste of Spain Article Study guide for test
- Spanish food over the centuries has been influenced by the Moors and the Spanish Explorers.
- How have these groups impacted Spanish food?
The Moors come from Africa and they brought with them their recipes to the Iberian Peninsula. The Spanish Explorers were exposed to many new foods and spices while traveling and they also brought back to Europe new foods which had an influence on recipes and regional dishes.
- Spaniards eat 5 meals a day and lunch being the largest meal of them all. What is the name of each meal?
- El desayuno usually consists of a crusty bread, bollas, gallettas, café or hot chocolate.
- Around 11:00am, Spaniards will have a snack (la merienda) which usually consists of olives, ham, and eggs.
- Due to hot weather in Spain during the summer season, Spaniards have been forced indoors for a long lunch. It is the largest meal of the day compared to the other meals. It will be served from 1 to 3 pm and will consist of 3 courses. First they will have a salad followed by chicken or other meat or fish, and for dessert, fruit. They may also enjoy a Spanish omelet called a Tortilla which has eggs, potatoes and onions.
- After the meal some may take a nap, called a siesta in Spanish, and usually the elderly or the very young will actually nap.
- During the lunch break, most stores in rural areas are closed and the town becomes quiet. The city will be more alive, but you still will find closed stores.
- During el almuerzo most families go home for lunch if they can because it is great opportunity for families to socialize.
10. How does the tradition of a long lunch have an impact on the family? Having families follow the tradition of eating together helps build stronger families because they communicate at the table.
11. Before dinner Spaniards will enjoy another small snack, called a merienda. A specialty sandwich called a bocadillo con queso is very popular. A bocadillo mean mouthful in Spanish.
12. Sometimes Spaniards may also eat a piece of a tortilla, some sliced deli meats, or tapas which are small samplers of foods usually served in small plates. A tapa means lid in Spanish.
13. La cena will not be served until 9 to 10 pm and it is usually very light consisting of milk and a slice of the Spanish tortilla.
14. In cities or where people don’t have the opportunity to go home in the afternoon for the big meal, they will have a large dinner such as a stew consisting of meat and vegetables which will be served as a 3 course meal by separating the broth, vegetables, and the meat.
15. After a meal, fruit is usually served instead of desserts. Spanish save special desserts for special occasions such as birthdays and holidays.
16. Each area of Spain has its own regional specialties. The demographics, geography, and climate of their area have a great impact on special regional recipes.
17. The Tomatina is a festival where people have a huge food fight throwing tomatoes. They bring in 80-90 thousand pounds of tomatoes for the food fight. They also will have an orchestra playing during the festivities.
