We are playing Ultimate Frisbee this unit and enjoying this incredible weather!
Some basic skills learned are the backhand throw, the one-hand high catch, the one-hand low catch, and the Pancake "money" catch. We are working on self-correction using the concepts of "Point-of-release" when aiming to our target and the "Curl-in/Curl-out" technique for throwing, making sure the frisbee is flat and level upon release to get a nice throw to our teammates.
This week will will be practing the "Down the line" strategy, to get the frisbee down the field quickly and efficiently, so as to beat the defense. We are also working on our offensive pivoting skills to make a clear lane in which to pass the frisee by the defenders. Playing defense while staying out of the "bubble" of the frisbee thrower is crucial to not get penalized, and "counting off to 3-one thousand drop" helps the defender keep the game moving and possibly get a turnover from the player they are guarding.
Remember..... you cannot run with the frisbee, but can only take 3 "momentum" steps if needed to slow down after catching the frisbee while already moving. You cannot take steps if you are staionary when throwing, except to use pivot steps to go around the defender.
This week we also have some fun learning some trick throws and catches and have a few contests, like the longest throw, which will also be a field day event at the end of the year.
