Welcome to the Glenn Intelligence Agency!

GlennWelcome to the GIA!

The 2000-09 year promises to be an incredible one! We have amended Social Studies standards and myriad resources to assist us in our "global investigations!"
Our specially trained agents of the GLENN INTELLIGENCE AGENCY will become skilled at higher level thinking and will soon be investigating the history, civics, geography and economics of the Middle East Africa and Asia! Parents, join us for OPEN HOUSE and visit the Realia Museum at the GIA.

Differentiation

Differentiated20classroomimage007

" The teacher adjusts content, process and product in response to student readiness, interest, and learning profile."
The Glenn Intelligence Agency is a differentiated classroom where a teacher’s role shifts. Teachers and students accept and respect one another's similarities and differences. Assessment is an ongoing diagnostic activity that guides instruction. Learning tasks are planned and adjusted based on assessment data. Students work in a variety of group configurations, as well as independently. Flexible grouping is evident. The teacher is primarily a coordinator of time, space, and activities rather than a provider of information. The aim is to help students become self-reliant learners. Students and teachers collaborate in setting class and individual goals. The teacher uses a variety of instructional strategies to help target instruction to student needs.

Reading and Writing in the Content Area

Shabanu

"Reading furnishes the mind only with materials for knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours." John Locke "Only a generation of readers will span a generation of writers." Steven Spielberg At Mabry, every teacher is a reading and writing teacher. The GIA will have parallel readings to enhance their global investigations. Writing will also be an integral part of the Social Studies experience.

Intelligent Behaviors

Intelligence

GIA agents are encouraged to model intelligent behaviors as defined by Arthur Costa. These include decreasing impulsivity; demonstrating persistence; listening to others; flexibility in thinking; meta-cognition; questioning and problem posing; checking for accuracy and precision; drawing on past knowledge; precision of thought and language; collecting data using all the senses; ingenuity, originality, insightfulness; creativity and wonderment; curiosity.

"Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit." --Aristotle

May 5-9

Monday:  It's great to be finished with our FINAL EXAM and CRCT's.  A word on both:
CRCT:  Tough call.  The first test on a new group of standards.  Some very specific questions, some topics explored in more depth than others. This is very typical and two years ago when science adopted new standards, their first test was difficult.  We've taught every single standard, all the vocabulary, the textbook plus supplementary materials.  We've covered it all.
FINAL: VERY VERY pleased with the number of A's and B's on this comprehensive final.  The topics and questions asked were all given to the students, we even went over the test questions, each and every one of them.  Students who did well on the final have a history of success on formative assessments: Quizzes, classwork, word wall, essential questions...all the steps that lead toward solid knowledge of content.  Practicing intelligent behaviors such as class participation, question and problem posing, listening to others and decreasing impulsivity also play heavily into final exam success.

PLEASE contact me by email at glenda.glenn@cobbk12.org if you are concerned about your child's final exam grade and I can provide more insights into reasons.

PLEASE NOTE I WILL BE OUT MONDAY FOR MEDICAL PROCEDURES.
