WATER PRESSURE!
We'll start reviewing environmental policies in
Africa. We'll discuss the fact that not only is water scarce, but the
available water is often unclean. Students will examine their own
water usage as a comparison.

DESERTIFICATION
Increased population and livestock pressure on marginal lands are
accelerating desertification in the semiarid Sahel region of western
Africa, which has also endured extensive and severe droughts since the
1960s. Intensive agriculture and overgrazing compacts the soil,
diminishing its capacity to hold water and exposing the soil to
erosion. Slashing and burning of natural forest and bushland has added
to the destruction by removing a natural barrier to wind erosion and
the root systems that slow topsoil erosion. Dust storms have therefore
become frequent where the ground has been stripped of vegetation.

TOXIC WASTE DISPOSAL
Electronic waste – discarded computers, cell phones and the like –
from the U.S. and Europe poisons children in Ghana who earn a living in
the dump, burning it and extracting copper and other valuable materials
with their bare hands.
Tons of toxic waste collected from British municipal dumps is being
sent illegally to Africa in flagrant breach of this country's
obligation to ensure its rapidly growing mountain of defunct
televisions, computers and gadgets are disposed of safely.
Hundreds of thousands of discarded items, which under British law
must be dismantled or recycled by specialist contractors, are being
packaged into cargo containers and shipped to countries such as Nigeria
and Ghana, where they are stripped of their raw metals by young men and
children working on poisoned waste dumps.

SOIL
In sub-Saharan
Africa, intensive land use due to increased population pressures is
mining soils of nutrients needed to sustain agriculture. Sowing crops
season after season without fertilizers -- unaffordable for most
farmers -- drains the land of much-needed minerals. Even natural
fertilizers like post-harvest stubble and livestock dung are being
scavenged from the land and used for fuel. Limited water availability
has restricted crop diversification and the adoption of proper soil
management. Nutrient depletion has caused crop production to stagnate
or decline many African countries, thereby endangering food and
economic security.
