THE POWER OF ONE

The students finished "The Power of One" today. They were left with a very meaningful message from the movie: In South Africa and around the world the struggle to gain human dignity and equal rights for all people continues.

Changes can come from the power of many, but only when the many come together to form that which is invincible...the power of one.

We have come full circle this year, starting the year studying Africa and ended with studying the power of one among the famous and the infamous. Using the movie to tell the true story of one British boy and his life's journey in South Africa during WWII and apartheid.  Hopefully, the children will take away with them the importance of their actions and the ripple effect it has on the people around them. The power they possess is infinite and they will harness the goodness for generations.

Have a Great Summer!

THE POWER OF ONE

FRIDAY MAY 16: COLLECTING ALL SOCIAL STUDIES BOOKS.

We have been examining  the true power of one. The famous and the infamous, determining the qualities of what makes a hero. Is it a role model, a celebrity, an entrepreneur, a scientist, an inventor,or a president? Students have been in the Media Center this week exploring the answers to those questions. They have been compiling a list of people and their achievements. Their final task is to create a jeopardy game to be played on Friday.Next week we will conclude this unit with the showing of "THE POWER OF ONE." Our guest speaker today focused on setting goals for your life and how to balance them. Hopefully, your child will share with you what they learned today from his performance.

All missing work will be completed on Friday. Please do not panic over your child's grade, as I have posted assignments that are in the process of being graded, but are not recorded yet. There will be no last minute horror stories except mine trying to finish grading fast enough. So please be patient. Thanks.

Chinese security forces swarm Tibet.

Soldiers on foot and in armored carriers swarmed Lhasa Saturday, enforcing a strict curfew in Tibet's capital city a day after protesters burned shops and cars to vent their anger against Chinese rule. In the western city of Xiahe, police clashed with hundreds of Buddhist monks leading a sympathy demonstration. The violence erupted just two weeks before China's Summer Olympic celebrations kick off with the start of the torch relay, which passes through Tibet. China is gambling that its crackdown will not draw an international outcry over human rights violations that could lead to boycotts of the Olympics. The latest unrest began Monday on the anniversary of a 1959 uprising against Chinese rule. It was the fiercest challenge to Beijing's authority in nearly two decades. Tibet was effectively independent for decades before communist troops entered in 1950.
