In 8th grade health we are finishing up our unit on drugs and alcohol. Students completed a Drug Scavenger hunt using classroom resources. This activity will be a quiz grade. On Friday students viewed a powerpoint entitled faces of Meth and a video about the harmful effects of Steroids. Great discussion was generated from the activities.

Next week we will begin our Human Growth and Development unit.

6th grade Tumbling Unit Complete

all 6th graders in PE just completed a unit of stunts/tumbling on Friday. Students picked 10 skills that were introduced and practiced to perform for a skills check for mastery. We will begin our dance rotation next week.

7th grade Health to have CPR test on Tuesday January 29th.

Mr. Graber's 7th grade Health classes have completed the skills checks and video portion of the CPR Unit and are preparing to take the unit tests on Tuesday. In order to become certified students must achieve at least 80% or higher on both 10 question CPR tests. Students were asked to take their studyguides home to study over the weekend and on Monday. Good Luck!

8th grade PE update

8th grade PE students have been learning the exciting lifetime sport of racquetball. We reviewed serving and forehand/backhand. Emphasis in this unit has been on building upon skills learned in previous playing experiences in PE and improve game strategy and shot selection. We used milk jug targets to practice kill shots and discussed the importance of not only hitting the ball on the wall, but also striking the ball from a low level to minimize the resulting bounce. We discussed the imprtance of placing shots away from opponents and that it is not always best to hit tha ball as hard as you can. We played a Doubles Ladder tournament.

This week we will play two other exciting racquetball games- singles and Cutthroat (a three person game). This will give you experience in all racquetball formats. We will compare and contrast the similarities and differences in the strategy between the three games.

6th PE Update

6th grade PE students have been learning the exciting lifetime sport of racquetball. Skills focused on in class have been forehand, backhand, drive serve, lob serve, pass shot, down the line shot etc. We have placed a great emphasis on game etiquette including calling out the score before the serve, Hinder calls, and self-refereeing tactics that help the game run smoothly and avoid disagreements. We played a Doubles Ladder tournament.

7th grade Health Update

We started our Adult CPR unit last week and students have been really getting into it. We have learned the Emergency action steps, Overcoming barriers to act, When to call 911, as well as how to decide what kind of care to provide based on the conditions found in the check of the victim. Students have practiced the skills of Conscious choking Adult and Checking the unconscious victim with a partner. In addition, they worked w/ the CPR mannequins to practice CPR and unconscious choking skills.

In the next couple of days we will refine our decision-making on what kind of care to give based on the conditions that exist (giving the right care). Knowing each skill is great, but if you don't use it at the right moment it can lead to a bad outcome for the victim.

Also coming up on Wednesday, October 31 we will have our two 10 question Written Tests. Remember, you must get at least 8/10 on each test and pass all four skills checks in order to get your CPR card.

Good Luck!
