ANWR - Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

48coastal_plain_summer_2

With the cost of fuel skyrocketing and ANWR a sensitive issue I went looking for some information. I found a movie made by the inhabitants of ANWR that lays it out pretty well. Click the link below.

The picture is of the ANWR coastal plain in summer. The coastal plain is the only part of ANWR that is open to drilling.

Spring Concert

Our last concert of the year will be Tuesday, May 13th at 7 p.m. in the Mabry Theater. This concert will showcase the hard work we’ve done this year and will include a performance by the Mabry Symphony.

6th and 7th grade parents and students! Please plan to stay until the end of the concert. The 7th and 8th grade orchestra members and the Mabry Symphony will appreciate you being in the audience and I think you will find the growth in skill level from one group to another interesting and inspiring.

IMPORTANT! In order to combine the two classes from each grade there will be an extra rehearsal before or after school for 6th and 7th graders. The Sixth Grade Orchestra will rehearse from 4:30PM until 6PM on Tuesday, May 6th and from 7:50AM until 8:50AM on Thursday, May 8th. The Seventh Grade Orchestra will rehearse from 4:30PM until 6PM on Thursday, May 8th. These are important rehearsals that cannot be made-up as it is the only time to combine the classes that will be performing together in concert. Please make arrangements now to have your child at these rehearsals.

The 8th grade will stay after school the day of the concert for a final run-through. We will have a pizza dinner following the rehearsal. Eighth graders must bring their concert clothes with them to school that morning!

The 6th and 7th grade orchestras should arrive at school no later than 6:15 to tune and prepare for their performance. The 7th grade orchestra will meet in the Chorus room and the 8th grade orchestra will meet in the Orchestra room.

Cello and bass players may need to bring their own instruments. Please bring them on Monday so we have a couple days to tune them all.

Concert dress for all groups is solid black on bottom, solid white on top. Girls may choose between long black skirt (ankle length or longer) or black pants. Boys will wear long ties. This is a semi-formal event. Sport shoes and t-shirts are not appropriate attire. Students not dressed appropriately will not be allowed to take the stage.

IMPORTANT! We will need parent chaperones/helpers for the 8th grade pizza dinner at 5:15 and at 6:15 in the band, orchestra and chorus rooms and to sit with and actively monitor the groups in the audience before and after they have performed. Please indicate below how you can help.

If you have any questions please email at Chris.Doemel@Cobbk12.org

Summer Camps

Music_camp_2

I'd like to encourage all of my students to attend a summer music camp. Camps are a fun experience that allow students to meet new friends and work intently on their music skills. Some camps are over night, some are day camps. The cost will vary accordingly. Most camps offer some type of scholarship or tuition assistance.

Here are links to some of the local camps.

For My Viola Players

Yuri Bashmet is one of the world's foremost viola solists. The first video is of him performing Robert Schumann's - Fairy Tales for Viola and Piano.

The second is Violist William Primrose performing the Paganini Caprice #24 for Violin on Viola. Paganini published his violin caprices as studies and they were thought to be unplayable on the violin by most people, let alone the viola.
