Congrats! You never thought this moment would arrive, but here it is...you are finally going to middle school! You have now moved on up to the big leagues. That is right...you are officially a middle school student.
The transition to middle school is the same for everyone. You will encounter new people, new school subjects, new activities, and many more teachers than you are used to. This may seem scary because you are now a small fish in a big pond, but remember: all new experiences are frightening at first. If you have the right attitude and solid information on what to expect, you will be a middle school pro in no time.
Here are some things to think about.
More Work!
Teachers in middle school view their students as young adults. This means that your assignments and tests will be more challenging. In addition to your nightly dose of homework, you may also have more papers and exams. The workload may seem overwhelming, but your teachers understand that you and your classmates are making an adjustment. If you feel that they do not understand what you are doing, and you are having trouble adjusting to the amount of work, make sure you talk with your parent or school counselor.
The Big Lock-Up
The hallways of Mabry are lined with lockers, and one of them will be your very own "home base" during the day. Instead of lugging your stuff around in one bag, or stashing it in a classroom desk or cubby, you now have a place to store everything safely. You will have a couple for opportunities during the day to go to your locker. Remember, it is your responsibility to stay organized so that you can find all of your stuff!
Schedules
You will have different teachers, in different classrooms, throughout the day. Yikes! No doubt about it: the middle school "class schedule" can seem overwhelming at first. You will figure it out in no time, but a new building and a new routine can be confusing for everyone. If you have trouble finding something, or keeping track of where you have to be, speak up! Your teachers, counselors, and other school staff are here to help.
Bye Bye Recess
In elementary school, recess was probably your favorite part of the day, right? So how will you survive without it? It is hard at first but you will get use to it!!
Final Thoughts
Remember that we are here to help you. Our goal is for you to be successful. If you have any concerns, or feel like you need additional help, the counselors and teachers will be happy to help you. Middle school is a lot of hard work, but it is also a great deal of fun!
